MILAN, Feb. 8, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) — Mediaset SpA, through its unit Elettronica Industriale, is ready to spend at least 40 mln eur to bid for regional WiMax licences, the daily Il Sole 24 Ore said without giving a source.
Last month, the communications ministry said it had received 29 offers for the auction of WiMax frequencies.
According to the daily, the auction for the licences will start Feb 13.
Mediaset and Ariadsl are the only two candidates for licences in all 20 Italian regions and ‘macroregions’, which compromise several regions.
Telecom Italia SpA and Wind are only bidding for licences in the seven macroregions, while Fastweb (OOTC:FSWBF) is interested in licences in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, the newspaper said.
Vodafone (NYSE:VOD) Group PLC and 3G Italia are not taking part in the bid, it added.
